Passing of a Dear Friend - Evelyn Groman

Hello Loves,

It has been quite a time, with Dr. Desmar Walkes and all the things we have had to do, all the places we have had to see and all the people who have wanted to see us.

When I arrived I stayed with Nico and Coby, to get over my jet lag. Thank God AND thank God I travelled business class.  At least I arrived quite human. Then I went over to Elna and Mercia in Somerset West to wait for Dr Desmar Walkes and you know how marvelous those dear friends are.

Here is a photo of me meeting Dr Walkes at the Airport. She slept 12 hours flat, after she arrived.

The next day Pinky wanted us to see her squatters’ camp. Nico thought it was too much for me to walk, so he and Dr Walkes went with Pinky and a friend. The photo below is Pinky and two other people at the children's crèche (Day care center). Dr Walkes was quite impressed with the crèche but the squatters’ camp was awful.

That night, Elna and Mercia, Leigh Jane and Linda Burger, Coby, Nico, Dr Walkes and I had prayer together. It was quite amazing. Some of us were weeping, others were praying and somehow or another God spoke to Nico to get help for Pinky's squatters’ camp.

I don’t want to make too much of it but I do believe Dr Walkes’ presence had something to do with it and it is going to make a difference to thousands of people. Dr Walkes was ecstatic. The Somerset West Prayer meeting will bring results we may never realize.

The next day Dr Walkes and I left for Durban where Linda Combrinck met us and we had some absolutely fabulous times of fellowship and spiritual uplifting, before we left for the Drakensberg. I personally felt something amazing was going to happen to us while in that area and I was right.

Linda gave me a book that brought a fresh revelation to my spirit, which I will share with you later. One of the most blessed times Dr Walkes had, was on a walk she and Linda took for quite a few miles into the mountains.  Maybe for the first time we were able to get away from everything and everyone. No phone, no newspaper, no TV - Just God and God's creation. It was breathtaking.

BBQ South Africa Style

Linda cooked barbecue style (Braai in S.A.) and we sat around and talked about Jesus.

When we left, we passed an African Clinic on the way to Durban. Dr. Walkes was very impressed with the nursing staff and stopped to talk to them about Doctors coming out from the States to help them. Unfortunately there may be too much red tape involved. So we travelled on to Durban, knowing I still had appointment with a friend, Heidi, who would be able to give us more advice about Doctors coming out to South Africa to help in anyway possible.

Time was too short for Dr.Walkes. Before we knew it, her departure was looming up before us. There was one more day and it was decided that she should see some animals in a Game Reserve close to Durban. I was delighted that she was able to see so many South African buck, giraffes, birds, a monitor lizard, and just before we left we saw Rhino in the distance.

Fixing Flat Tire

Unfortunately we had a burst tire. The road was so rocky, we were sure the whole underneath of our car had been torn away, but it hadn't. I think the Angels lifted us up and carried us over the worst parts.

On Sunday Dr.Walkes left for the States and I went to Blakely’s for a couple of days, to chill out. Happiness (Elaine’s maid,) came to see me and help in anyway she could. Elaine told me that she and her three children often did not have enough to eat.

Happiness

I was devastated. She also needed money to pay her water bill, I did not have a lot of money on me, but I told Elaine, I couldn't eat if I knew she was hungry. So I gave her what I had and asked her what she could buy with it.

Mostly she wanted Mielie meal (corn meal) cabbage carrots, milk, beans, etc. I made her promise she would buy some meat. She sat there and wept and so did I. She loves Jesus, she told me and she knew He would take care of her. Pray for her. Her son, Wesley wants to go to Bible College and be a Pastor, so let’s pray for him too.

The most exciting time of all happened at the McCord Hospital.  I can't believe that 50 years ago, as a young girl, I used to go and preach to the Nurses at the McCord Hospital. We have come full circle.  I will share with you in next month newsletter what information I found out.

Lots of love!
